Epidural Injections for Sciatica Epidural injections are mainly given for leg pain or Sciatica secondary to Slip Disc and Nerve compression. The aim of injection is to provide pain relief in combination with medicines and Physiotherapy. An Epidural Injection is beneficial for the patient during acute episode of Leg pain and provides sufficient pain relief in most of the cases to allow rehabilitation program. Some patient get temporary relief, but some get long lasting benefit up to 1 year. If First injection works, then it can be repeated up to three times in a year. The most common method of giving Epidural injection is by Selective nerve root block or SNRB. Other are Facet Blocks, Caudal injection and Lumbar mid line epidural injections. SNRB is given in operation theater under fluoroscopic control. The injection is given at the level of Foramen. The injection is combination of Bupivacaine and a steroid . Fluoroscopy (live X-ray) is used to ensure the medication is delivered to the correct location. If the patient’s pain reduces after the injection, it shows that the Back pain generator is the specific Nerve root that has just been injected. Following the injection, the steroid also helps reduce swelling around the nerve root.
