Lumbar disc prolapse and Cauda equina syndrome A 37 year old male presented with long standing buttock and lower leg pain since 1 year. His pain was gradually increasing and affecting his daily activities. He was not able to walk or stand for more than few minutes. He had stooped posture and his body was tilted to one side. for last one week he did not have control over urine and was wetting his clothes. His MRI showed a huge L4 5 disc. His clinicla picture of leg pain and loss of bladder control was due to nerve compressin in the spine. This is called CAUDA EQUINA SYNDROME. He underwent L45 Microdiscectomy at Jaypee Hospital. Microdiscectmy is a minimally invasive surgery in which prolapsed disc is remved through a very small incision of 2 cm. Due to small size of surgical cut, blod loss is less and recovery is fast. Patient had significant improvement in pain with slight improvemnt in bladder functions. Patient was discharged on second day after surgery and is expected to recover fully in 3 months. Cauda Equina syndrome i.e sciatica like pain with loss of bladder control is a surgical emergency. Cases with short duration & partial symptoms show good recovery.
